The UCF Knights have added a weapon to their 3-point attack with a junior-college transfer.

On Wednesday, the Knights announced the signing of guard Frank Bertz to a national letter of intent for the upcoming 2018-19 season. Bertz will make a cross-country journey from California after playing the last two seasons at East Los Angeles College.

“Frank will bring some versatility to our program with length on the perimeter,” Knights head coach Johnny Dawkins said, per the release. “He has a really good basketball IQ, a good feel for the game, and he’s a knockdown 3-point shooter. So I think he’ll provide a lot for us.

Bertz shot 48 percent from long range in the 2017-18 season, going 79-for-166. In total, he averaged 13.2 points per game and 3.6 rebounds per game, shooting 88 percent from the free-throw line.

The Knights’ free-throw shooting was among the worst in the nation last season. They shot 64.1 percent from the line–good enough for 343rd out of 351 teams–as guard Chance McSpadden led the way with an even 76 percent.

UCF’s 3-point shooting is also likely to improve with Bertz, as the Knights’ shot 32.9 percent from deep last year. Guards Djordjie Mumin and B.J. Taylor each shot 38.8 percent to lead the Knights.

“[Bertz is] a team guy, and he’ll contribute in a lot of ways, both offensively and defensively,” Dawkins said.

Bertz is the second player to sign with UCF for the incoming class. He joins guard Dre Fuller from Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg.
