Just about anything to do with the Guardians of the Galaxy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is comedic. That holds true to the second trailer for the sequel of 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
From Baby Groot waving to Gamora in the middle of battle to Drax making an adoption joke about Nebula, the latest trailer shows that everything the original had will be in the second, just wrapped in a new story.
Perhaps the biggest part of that story is Chris Pratt‘s Star-Lord (or Peter Quill) meeting his father. Kurt Russell plays Ego, Quill’s father. In the comics, Ego is the Living Planet and is quite literally a planet who lives. He was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby at a time when Kirby was interested in the universe in 1960s. Ego made his first appearance in Thor No. 132 in 1996.
According to a report by IGN.com’s Joe Skrebels, adding Ego was part of a character-swap deal between Fox and Marvel that sent allowed Negasonic Teenage Warhead to appear in Deadpool.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Pratt as Star-Lord, Russell as Ego, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Vin Diesel as Baby Groot, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Michael Rooker as Yondu and Karen Gillan as Nebula. It is set for a May 5 release date.
