In what should be considered a not-so-surprising turn of events, Benedict Cumberbatch—or Doctor Strange, as he will forever be known as after this November—announced that he will star alongside the rest of the Avengers in the upcoming film, Avengers: Infinity War, according to a report by ComicBook.com’s Jamie Lovett.
The Avengers films have been the prime examples of the superhero-film industry since the first one was released back in 2012. And with the growing number of superhero-film releases each year and the desire of Marvel to go so far as to reshoot scenes so that they can add in new characters, it’s not surprising that Doctor Strange, who is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s most interesting characters, will be included in the series.
Rumors have been circling that Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Doctor Strange in several films, not just Infinity War. For those familiar with the situation, Doctor Strange’s Eye of Agamotto is rumored to be an Infinity Stone that Thanos, arguably the main antagonist of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is searching for, according to a report by ComicBook.com’s Christian Hoffer.
So it would only make sense that Strange would be in Infinity War. He is also rumored to be in Thor: Ragnarok, which would be the first crossover appearance for the Sorcerer Supreme.
Cumberbatch is one of the biggest names in TV (thanks to BBC’s Sherlock) and in film (Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Imitation Game and The Hobbit, among others) and has proven to be an excellent choice for just about any role that is thrown his way. So Marvel knows that they have a good one on their hands, and it seems they plan to use him as much as possible.
Doctor Strange and Avengers: Infinity War both are setting up to be stellar films, both having all-star casts and the excellent acting of Benedict Cumberbatch at the helm. Cumberbatch has yet to disappoint on any film or television program that he has worked on so far, so expect big things coming from him moving forward in the MCU.
Doctor Strange opens Nov. 4, 2016.
