UConn Defeats UCF to Win Weekend Series

The UCF Knights won their first game over the UConn Huskies with a five-run win. Since then, the Knights have lost two in a row, including a mercy-rule defeat on April 7.

The UCF Knights (26-15, 6-3 in American Athletic Conference) lost their second-straight game to the UConn Huskies (15-24, 2-7 in AAC) 5-1 Sunday afternoon in the last game of a three-game series in Connecticut.

Already leading 2-1, UConn extended its lead in the fifth inning, scoring two of their five runs.

The Huskies had two outs, and infielder Briana Marcelino was on second base. Redshirt freshman Olivia Sappington homered to right field for her game-high two RBIs and to put UConn up 4-1.

UCF had a poor day at the plate, as only three of the Knights’ 10 batters recordedĀ a hit. Right fielderĀ Megan Greenwell led the way with a 2-for-2 outing, a walk and UCF’s lone run.

Down 5-1 going in the seventh inning, UCF tried to get back in the game but ultimately came up short. With one out and two on base, freshman Denali Schappacher flied out to center field. Schappacher finished her day going 0-for-3.

Sophomore Aubrey Johnson was next to bat. She had the Knights’ only RBI for the game, recording it in the top of the fifth, but struck out for UCF’s final out of the game.

Sophomore Alea White (20-10) was the lone pitcher for the Knights, losing her second-consecutive game. White allowed seven hits and five runs (four earned) while walking three and recording seven strikeouts. In total, White had 18 strikeouts for the weekend.

Sophomore Katie Koshes (3-4) made her second-straight start of the series, pitching all 7.0 innings. Koshes recorded eight strikeouts while walking four. She also allowed four hits for one earned run.

The first run of the game came in the second inning when sophomore Chloe Kerns homered to left-center field to put the Huskies up 1-0.

UConn scored again in the third inning when outfielder Kelli Bates scored from second off an error by the shortstop.

In the fifth inning, the Knights were down 2-0 with two outs. Johnson stepped to the plate with Greenwell on second. She then singled to center field, allowing Greeenwell to score and keeping the game close at 2-1.

UConn tallied its last run of the game in the sixth inning when sophomore Carli Cutler homered to right field, giving the Huskies a 5-1 lead.

The Knights will play again on Wednesday at 5 p.m. against the University of North Floridain Jacksonville.
