Orlando City SC didn’t see much action in the first two rounds of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. But in the third round, City selected Danny Deakin with the club’s 64th-overall pick, according to the club.

“Going into this round, we hoped Danny would be available, and we’re happy he was still on the baord,” City general manager Niki Budalic said, per the release. “His attacking capabilities, his vision and his passing ability will be an important asset to us this coming season.”

Deakin played collegiate soccer at the University of South Carolina and Mercyhurst University. The Sheffield, England, native led the Gamecocks in 2016 with seven goals, five game-winners and six assists. Following his final season with South Carolina, he played for National Premier Soccer League side Detroit City FC. There, he started seven of his nine games, tallying a goal and two assists.

City opens its season on March 5 against New York City FC at 5 p.m. in the club’s new soccer-specific stadium in downtown Orlando.
