Famed comedian and actor Dave Chapelle is climbing back into the spotlight in 2017 for a brand new comedy special to be exclusively available on Netflix.
Netflix announced on Monday that they will have three never-before-seen specials from Chapelle debuting in the new year, according to a report by HollywoodReporter.com’s Kate Stanhope.
The new special will be produced by Netflix and available exclusively on their streaming service.
The other two specials will be recordings Chapelle has done in the past, one at Austin City Limits Live and the other from the Hollywood Palladium, according to a report by The Huffington Post’s Maxwell Strachan.
After a lengthy hiatus from mainstream comedy, Chapelle’s sudden reappearance might have something to do with Netflix’s platform and the audience it reaches.
Netflix has become a haven for comedy specials over the past few years, producing specials for comedians like Aziz Ansari and Patton Oswalt.
Oswalt would go on to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for his Netflix special Talking for Clapping.
Chapelle, fresh off a critically acclaimed turn hosting Saturday Night Live, could be courting the streaming service for a new show.
He is on record saying that he missed working on Chappelle’s Show—his Comedy Central sketch-based show—but that he didn’t “want the money” or “the drama.”
Netflix’s subscriber base is another possible alluring factor. With over 70 million subscribers worldwide, Netflix reaches across cultural and national boundaries.
For its part, Netflix is eager to move forward with this collaboration. Lisa Nishimura, Netflix’s vice president of original documentaries and comedies, stated during the announcement of the specials that “Dave Chapelle is a legendary voice in comedy—searing, vital and, now more than ever, essential.”
Look out for Chapelle’s new comedy specials debuting next year exclusively on Netflix.
