Ahead of the 2018 Major League Soccer season, Orlando City SC and forward Dom Dwyer agreed to a deal that will see one of the club’s original players remain in Central Florida for the foreseeable future.

According to a club press release, Dwyer and the Lions agreed to a three-year contract extension.

“We are happy to have reached an agreement that both Dom and the club can be proud of,” City general manager Niki Budalic said, per the release. “Bringing him here toward the end of the season was an ambitious move, and we are really pleased with how he adjusted and developed in the short months he had. Dom is a big part of this team, and we are excited to see what he brings to the group this season and beyond.”

Prior to the latter half of the 2017 season, Dwyer spent his first years in MLS with Sporting Kansas City. He made his first appearance, a four-minute outing, in 2012 and went on to record 57 goals and nine assists while starting 111 of his 128 matches. He played for Orlando City’s USL Pro team in March 2013, prior to the club’s MLS days, helping Orlando City win the 2013 USL Pro Championship Game.

Dwyer was traded to Orlando City for a then-MLS record fee $1.6 million in allocation money: $400,000 in general-allocation money, $500,000 in targeted-allocation money, plus up to $700,000 in conditional future allocation money. He appeared in 12 of City’s 13 final matches, starting 11 of them and recording four goals and four assists. As an MLS All-Star, Dwyer scored an 86th-minute equalizer against Real Madrid C.F.

Despite being relatively new to both the international stage and being a U.S. citizen, Dwyer has made an impression. He scored 19 minutes into his senior-team debut against the Ghanaian men’s national team on July 1, 2017, and then again on July 8, 2017 against the Panamanian men’s national team on in the 2017 Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Gold Cup. Dwyer is the 10th USMNT player to score in his first two games.
