Actor Kenny Baker died at the age of 83 Saturday, according to a report by The Guardian‘s Nicola Slawson. Baker’s most famous role was the lovable droid R2-D2 from the Star Wars movies. Baker debuted as the character in 1977 and went on to play the droid in Episodes I, II, III, V and VI.

The 3-foot-8 actor also starred in other popular movies like Flash Gordon, Time Bandits and The Elephant Man, per Slawson.

Here’s what Baker’s niece, Abigail Shield, told The Guardian, per Slawson’s report.

“It was expected, but it’s sad nonetheless,” Shield said. “He had a very long and fulfilled life. He brought lots of happiness to people, and we’ll be celebrating the fact that he was well loved throughout the world. We’re all very proud of what he achieved in his lifetime.”
