The UCF Knights (8-5) played another double-header in the second day of the Green and Gold Classic in Jacksonville, first, shutting out the Western Carolina Catamounts (2-6) in five innings 8-0 on Feb. 24.

Sophomore Kamryn Toney (1-0) was the only pitcher for the Knights on the day. Toney earned her first win of the season, pitching her first complete game with one strikeout while allowing only one hit and one walk. Her no-hitter was broken up with a lead-off single from Madison Armstrong in the fifth.

Lily Hayes (0-3) started for the Catamounts, pitching 2.1 innings while allowing seven hits and seven earned runs. Haley Brogden pitched the last 2.0 innings, giving up only one run and four hits.

The Knights ran away with the shortened game, scoring in each of the first three innings. Already leading 4-0, infielder Jazmine Esparza batted two runners in to broaden the Knights’ lead in the third inning. Esparza doubled to left center-field, allowing Erin Emanuel and Hayley Bejarano to score for a 6-0 Knights lead.

Aubrey Johnson and Denali Schappacher also scored in the third. Johnson scored off a Schappacher single, and Schappacher scored when Cassady Brewer grounded out to second base.

Schappacher, who led off for the Knights, had the best statistical performance for the Knights. The freshman hit four of UCF’s 11 runs in four at-bats and had four runs and two RBIs.

Schappacher scored early when third baseman Courtney Rotton was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded in the first inning. The Bradenton, Florida, native singled up the middle in the second inning, allowing Emanuel to score. Schappacher was brought home in the same inning off a single from freshman Kaitlyn Jensen.
