Senior University of Central Florida pitcher Robby Howell has so far had one of his best collegiate seasons. On Monday, he added to his list of accolades after being named the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week. He earned the honor after his first-career complete-game shutout against Jacksonville University on March 17.
In the 4-0 Knights win, Howell pitched all nine innings, allowing just three hits and no walks with seven strikeouts. For Howell, that was his season-low in hits and walks and his second-highest number of strikeouts. In the season-opening 17-6 win over Siena College, Howell struck out nine.
Howell has so far started in five games and has compiled a 4-0 record with a 2.01 ERA so far. He has so far struck out a team-high 29 of his 129 batters faced in 31.1 innings. Against Howell, batters are hitting just .208.
UCF (17-4) will travel to face the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before facing Dartmouth College in a three-game home series on Friday.
