The move to waive David Mateos was an expected move by Orlando City SC since the beginning of the 2017 preseason. On Friday, the club officially made that move and also signed midfielder Danny Deakin and acquired striker Moussa Sane on loan, according to a press release.
“We’re excited to boost our squad with Danny and Moussa,” Lions general manager Niki Budalic said, per the press release. “Moussa is a young player with a lot of potential that can play as a striker or attacking midfielder, and Danny has impressed us since his arrival, and we look forward to seeing how he progresses with the team.”
The 23-year-old Deakin was selected by the Lions in the third round of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft after a stint with National Premier Soccer League side Detroit City FC and two collegiate seasons with the University of South Carolina. He has trained with the team all preseason.
Sane previously played for AS Dakar Sacré Sœur of the Senegalese first division. He was also a part of the player pool for the Senegal U-17 and U-19 men’s national teams. The 20-year-old is a product of the Galaxy United FC Academy.
As for Mateos, he originally signed with City in July 2015 after playing for Hungarian side Ferencvárosi TC, per the press release. He played in 29 matches for the Lions, starting 26 of them, and recorded an assist as well.
City opens its 2017 season against New York City FC in Orlando City Stadium on Sunday at 5 p.m.
